The History of the White House

The History Club welcomed Stewart McLaurin, the president of the White House Historical Association, to discuss his work and the history of the White House. Mr. McLaurin traced the history of the White House from its initial creation by architect James Hoban, on whom Mr. McLaurin has authored a book, through subsequent periods of American history that saw the house’s condition evolve with its occupants. Mr. McLaurin focused on the renovation and revitalization of the building during the Truman administration and under the direction of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Mr. McLaurin provided the club with copies of his book James Hoban: Designer and Builder of the White House.
