At St. Albans, the Social Service Program aims to encourage in students a sense of concern and responsibility for the community in which they live, to help them mature personally through a better understanding of people with whom they share the world, and to foster a commitment to continued service.
Service also benefits students by increasing their understanding of problems facing our community, by developing their sensitivities to differences and their abilities to work through them, by enhancing their self-awareness and independence, and by exposing them to career opportunities.
In the Lower School, students conduct seasonal toy, food, and clothing drives; contribute to causes identified in chapel or by individual classes; and interact face-to-face with individuals or groups that the students might not ordinarily have an opportunity to spend time with, including the elderly, the poor, and the homeless.
The Upper School Social Service Program has a 60-hour social service requirement that students must complete prior to their senior year. Projects undertaken at any of the approved social service agencies
must conform to the procedures
