Congratulations to C Former Thomas Power and Form II student Teddy Palmore, who took third and first in the D.C. Citywide Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 9!

Thomas correctly spelled magazine, benevolent, tamarind, charpoi, lahar, dossier, perestroika, shrieval, Baedeker, voortrekker, and hartebeest before missing with Galjoen, the national fish of South Africa, to take third.

Teddy, having placed tenth and fifth in his two previous attempts at the bee, was determined to improve his results in his last year of eligibility. “He did not disappoint,” commented Forms C,B,A science teacher and spelling bee advisor JT Miller. After correctly spelling barley, angst, azimuth, anachronism, escargot, fraulein, mandir, jnana, ipecac, rejoneador, pickelhaube, and schottische, Teddy and one other contestant remained in the competition. They would go another 8 rounds before Teddy moved ahead, correctly spelling the championship word betta and being crowned D.C. Citywide Champion. Teddy will head next to the Scripps National Bee in May.
