Suzanne Woods to Serve as Interim Associate Head

We are pleased to announce that Suzanne Woods has agreed to serve as Interim Associate Head of St. Albans for the 2018-2019 academic year.

In this role, she will provide insight and support to incoming Headmaster Jason Robinson as he joins our community. Although Jason and Suzanne will continue this spring to delineate her responsibilities, Suzanne plans to assume most of the duties held by David Baad ’83, while continuing to help lead our School of Public Service.

Since 2006, Suzanne has directed the School of Public Service, which offers an in-depth exploration of government, politics, and public service to about forty rising seniors from around the country and the world. As director, Suzanne has overseen all aspects of the summer program, from fundraising to admissions to curriculum development. Suzanne also teaches United States history in the Upper School, advises Form V students, serves as faculty advisor to the STA-NCS Government Club, and coaches field hockey at NCS.

Suzanne received her B.A., cum laude, in history from Yale University, where she played varsity lacrosse and was captain of the varsity field hockey team. She began her career teaching English and history, coaching three sports, and residing in the dorm at Westminster School, in Simsbury, Conn. After receiving her J.D., with distinction and as a member of the Order of the Coif, from Stanford Law School, Suzanne held judicial clerkships in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. She left a partnership at the Washington law firm of Williams & Connolly to become a St. Albans teacher. Here she has received the Davis Teaching Award, the Herman and Johanna Schoenfeld Prize, and, by vote of the seniors, the John F. McCune Prize.

We are confident that St. Albans, during this time of transition in leadership, will benefit greatly from Suzanne’s clarity of thought, sound judgment, good humor, and broad knowledge of our program and the Close schools.

Please join us in congratulating Suzanne and thanking her for taking on this responsibility.
