Freedom of Speech

The Conservative Club recently welcomed guest speaker Dr. Michael Poliakoff, president of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a free speech advocacy non-profit. Dr. Poliakoff, a recipient of the Department of Education’s Distinguished Service to Education Award, spoke about the history of free speech and its ancient Greek roots, as well as about its importance in higher education and successful democracies. The talk explained how and why the concept of free speech was created and why it is fundamental to any free and prosperous society. Dr. Poliakoff ended his lecture by outlining the various threats to freedom of speech today, both on college campuses and society in general, and in closing encouraged members of the Conservative Club to advocate for environments of free speech.
