STA Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month at Assemblies

Both the Upper and Lower Schools celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with special assemblies this month. At the Upper School assembly, Ms. Castellanos and Mr. Money interviewed Dr. Amelia Tseng, director of the linguistics program and associate professor at American University, about her new book and the role of language in community and culture. Students were then asked to discuss amongst themselves the specific games, words, phrases, songs, music, or food that remind them of their family and identity, before concluding with trivia led by the STA Latino Affinity Group.

In the Lower School, the group Tres Caliente (minus one for the day) performed a variety of musical stylings from around South and Central America. They invited the students to play along and match the varying rhythms with traditional instruments, vocals, and clapping. Some spontaneous dancing even swept through the theater as the students in the crowd found their groove.
