Inside the Little Sanctuary Once Again

A message from the Rev. Brooks Hundley:

In September, we leaned on the generosity of St. Albans Parish and their faith community as they opened their church doors so that our weekly chapels would continue as a foundational experience in the school year. And this week, we have returned to our beloved school chapel to bring the school year to a close. What an amazing experience to enter the space all together, gathered as the students and teachers and staff members of St. Albans School! We resumed the chapel experience in our Little Sanctuary with singing, prayers, and the reading of sacred words. In Upper School, Senior Warden, Thomas Duckenfield ’25 offered the final student homily of the year. This Thursday morning, the Upper School gathered again for the seniors’ last chapel. On Friday, the Lower School will gather for the first time in our beloved Little Sanctuary and continue having chapel in the space for the rest of the school year.

It is customary when returning to a sacred space for the community to ask for God’s blessing upon it. And appropriately, we began asking God to bless the space with a prayer of dedication and with students singing one of our favorite hymns together. With our voices together in song we asked for God’s blessing on the chapel. It is so wonderful to share this news with the community and even more special to be back in our cherished chapel. As the hymn’s refrain reminds us, “God has done marvelous things, I too will praise him with a new song.”

The Little Sanctuary Dedication Ceremony takes place tonight. See photos of the students' return to the newly renovated Little Sanctuary on our Flickr page and below:

Located in Washington D.C., St. Albans School is a private, all boys day and boarding school. For more than a century, St. Albans has offered a distinctive educational experience for young men in grades 4 through 12. While our students reach exceptional academic goals and exhibit first-rate athletic and artistic achievements, as an Episcopal school we place equal emphasis upon moral and spiritual education.
