Visual Arts

Art education begins in our light-filled Lower School studio, where boys gain experience with clay, colored pencil, marker, papier mâché, paint, sculpture, and textiles. Whether designing their own coat of arms or painting globes, Lower School artists often pursue projects tied to lessons learned in homeroom.

- Deborah Tharp, Former Chair, Visual Arts

“Is there any material we don’t use?”
This foundation is expanded upon in the Upper School, with students ultimately finding their niche in painting and drawing, sculpture, videography, photography, or digital art. All Upper School art classes are coordinate with National Cathedral School, which not only allows boys and girls to work together but also greatly expands the number of art offerings available to students at both schools.

Each May, student artists have a chance to display their talents and their commitment to the arts during the annual art show, which transforms the halls of the Upper and Lower School into colorful galleries.

Students interested in developing their skills outside the classroom are encouraged to apply for a Parents’ Association Visual Arts Fellowship, created in 2012-13 to stimulate boys’ interest and competence in visual arts during the summer months.
The St. Albans School Parents’ Association is proud to present the 2022 Visual Arts Summer Fellows Exhibition virtually this year. Enjoy images of the students’ artwork and hear about their experiences last summer exploring various art forms.
Located in Washington D.C.,  St. Albans School is a private, all boys day and boarding school. For more than a century, St. Albans has offered a distinctive educational experience for young men in grades 4 through 12. While our students reach exceptional academic goals and exhibit first-rate athletic and artistic achievements, as an Episcopal school we place equal emphasis upon moral and spiritual education.
