Seventeen members of the Class of 2025 were inducted into the Cum Laude Society at a service held at St. Alban’s Church on Monday, May 5, 2025. The Cum Laude Society recognizes academic rigor, as well as the values of excellence, justice, and honor. Catherine Karrels, head of school at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, delivered the induction address to the 17 new members, congratulating them on their hard work and dedication and recognizing their leadership not only in academics but also in involvement not only as academic leaders, but also in “community service, environmental efforts, student government, vestry, the arts, robotics, athletics, even poetry recitation while juggling.”
Recounting her story as a student, teacher, and school leader, Karrels encouraged the students to engage in lives of ongoing intellectual learning.
Concluded Karrels:
“I leave you with the words of Janet Erskine Stuart, a religious of the Sacred Heart, which feel especially relevant today: ‘Cultivate the wish to learn, rather than the wish to be taught. Be determined to “pick up” and do not wait for the Professor and the pedagogical devices of his or her craft... Do not think that lessons will do it; if you wait for lessons you will wait a life-time ... If we wait to be taught, we shall never learn.’
“You’ve been prepared here at St. Albans to become men of purpose who embrace a lifelong pursuit of learning in order to work for the greater good. You’ve been taught to choose the hard right over the easy wrong. As men formed to live with ‘openness, grace and respect,’ I have no doubt that you are not only prepared to navigate the future, you are prepared to lead it.”
