Book of St. Alban Digitized for First Time

Book of St. Albans

On June 22, the feast of St. Alban, Trinity Library in Dublin released a fully digitized thirteenth-century manuscript of The Book of St. Alban for the first time in its 700-year history. Created by Benedictine monk Matthew Paris of St. Albans Abbey, the manuscript recounts the miraculous martyrdom of St. Alban with intricate illustrations. St. Alban, the first Christian martyr in England and namesake of St. Albans School, was executed after hiding a priest from Roman authorities and converting to Christianity. According to the Venerable Bede, the medieval historian who wrote an early account of Alban's life, the executioner's eyes fell out of their sockets as Alban died. The manuscript, considered a masterpiece by medieval scholars, can be found on Trinity College Dublin's website: https://digitalcollections.tcd.ie/concern/works/8p58pm63q?locale=en.
