Clean Sweep for Cross-Country at IAC Championships

The St. Albans cross-country team joined the soccer program in earning an IAC championship banner this week with a dominating performance on a soggy course at Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Md., on Saturday. Laszlo Wolfe ’25 and five of his freshman and sophomore teammates started the day in style for the Bulldogs, taking the top six spots in the freshman-sophomore race. Wolfe paced the group at 18:34 followed by D.J. Heiber ’25 (19:09), Sammy Miller ’25 (19:50), Evan Virtue ’25 (19:53), Owen Weissman ’24  (20:24), and James Denney ’25 (20:39). Thomas Duckenfield ’25 also turned in a strong performance for the Bulldogs, who finished with 15 points as a team ahead of Landon (56 points) and St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes (64 points).
 
STA’s dominance continued in the varsity B race with Bulldog runners taking the first 14 spots and a team score of 15 to St. Stephen’s 61 and Landon’s 66. Will Spector ’23 led the way with a time of 19:04 followed by Theo Sotoodehnia ’22 (19:12), Joseph Laroski ’22 (19:29), William Barbee ’22 (20:17), and Danyal Osman ’25 (20:17) to account for STA’s scoring. Seven more Bulldog runners turned in sub-21:00 times including Jaylen Wills ’25, Teddy Palmore ’23, Henry Tracy ’25, Evan Daneker ’22, Ben Acosta ’23, Matthew Fujiyama ’23, and Samuel Reynolds ’22.
 
In the epilogue of the day, STA’s seven entrants in the varsity race all finished in the top 13 overall and the team brought home the IAC championship with 22 points, far outpacing second place Landon (67 points) and the rest of the field. Pierre Attiogbe ’23 earned his way onto the IAC champions board that hangs in the Activities Building with a time of 16:17. William Strong ’25 (2nd place, 17:07), Sebi Hume ’25 (4th, 17:18), Aidan Urbina ’22 (7th, 17:45), Jack Thomas ’23 (8th, 17:53) and Venya Kuzichev ’23 (9th, 18:11) will join Attiogbe on the All-IAC team as top-ten finishers in the race. 
 
St. Albans has won 12 consecutive championships and 35 overall. Pierre Attiogbe is the 21st STA runner to win the individual title. The Bulldogs finish their season next Saturday in the DC State Championship meet at Kenilworth Park in Northeast Washington, D.C.
