Boyle’s Two Goals Lead Soccer to 3-0 Win Over Appoquinimink

St. Albans Soccer hosted the Appoquinimink Jaguars from Middletown, DE Monday under an early fall sky dotted with soft clouds that kept the temperature to ideal levels.  Unfamiliar with each other, the teams spent most of the opening 20 minutes exchanging mid-field possessions without a lot of dangerous offensive chances.  As the half moved on, however, the Bulldogs started to move the ball rapidly and efficiently to find holes in the Jaguar defense.  After several quality chances and two corner kicks, Russ Khosravi broke through for the Bulldogs at the 33:00 mark with a well-placed shot to the low right corner of the net that eluded the diving Jaguar goalkeeper.  The visitors responded with an offensive push in the final minutes of the half but keeper Spencer Hall and the STA backline were up to the task to preserve the 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs came out with renewed purpose in the second half and their offense made several strong pushes led by Khosravi, Wayne Frederick, and James Boyle.  Boyle added to the STA lead at the 60:00 mark with a reverse tap-in at the left post.  Again, the Jaguars responded with offensive pressure as the last 20 minutes ticked down.  Scott Speaker, who took over in goal for the second half, shut the door to preserve the Bulldogs shutout.  Boyle added his second goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining to achieve the final margin.
With Frederick’s minutes increasing over the past three games and other injured players returning to the lineup, the Bulldogs have most of their roster intact as they head toward their final non-league game at Georgetown Day School Thursday (4:30pm start).  Their record stands at 3-2-1.
