Staff
The Bulldog football team showed up in Alexandria Saturday ready to play. From the opening kickoff the Blue and White used their speed on defense to stop Bishop Ireton's spread attack, as well as a balanced offense marked by bruising inside running and highlight-reel deep passes to control the ball and field position. Senior defensive back Miles Harmon '22 put the 'Dogs up 6-0 early with a 25-yard interception return down the same Ireton sideline his older brother Will '20 returned an interception for a TD in the 2019 win. Corbet Darden '22 added another score later in the first quarter on a 5-yard pass from Chase Williams '22 and Alex Tilton '22 reeled in Williams's pass for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 lead. Ireton struck late in the quarter on a 34-yard pass from Joseph Johnson to Jamie Kaiser in the back left corner of the end zone. Ireton converted the extra point to cut the Bulldog lead to 14-7 after the first quarter.
St. Albans took control in the second quarter with touchdown runs from Tilton and Williams. Another touchdown on a deep ball from Williams to Miles Harmon was called back by a penalty. The defense flexed its muscle in the quarter with an 8-play goal line stand. After stopping the Cardinals four times from inside the 5-yard line, St. Albans was called for a roughing the passer penalty on fourth down, giving Ireton four more shots from the two. The defensive middle led by tackle Nick Pittman '22 and linebacker Alex Tilton stuffed two inside running plays before a Johnson pass was knocked down in the end zone on 4th down. St. Albans went into halftime up 27-7. The third quarter was a stalemate until Kevin Glenn '22 took a screen pass 14 yards for a touchdown to make it 33-7 with less than a minute left. The St. Albans defense continued its strong play in the fourth quarter holding BI scoreless until a late touchdown that made the final score 33-15.
Alex Tilton led the rushing attack with 89 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries. Chase Williams ran for 69 yards on 8 carries and completed 10 of 26 passes for 204 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions. The offensive line was outstanding and was led by Carter Steinberg '22, Nick Pittman, George Broeksmit '23, James Baker '22, and Marek Jin '25. There was a complete team effort on defense with Jeff Davis '22, Bob Gross '22, Steele Bohigian '23, Lance Gartrell '22, Luke Harmon '22, Miles Harmon '22, Ethan Engel '22, Thomas Stein '24, Eli Quarles '23, Kendall Weaver '22, Corbet Darden, Nick Pittman, Alex Tilton, and Kevin Glenn all making contributions.
This was Head Coach Orion Martin's first game and first win at the helm of the program. He was joined on the sideline by assistant coaches Dennis Bakke, Billy Schweitzer, Cameron Dantley '03, and Hank Speights '07. Next up on the schedule the Bulldogs travel to Liberty High School in Sykesville, Md., to take on the Lions at 6: 00 p.m. Friday, September 10.
