Alexander Robertson Vap ’00 Memorial

In January of this year, the Class of 2000 lost a great friend and teammate to an intense struggle with thymic cancer.

Alex Vap was a stand-out athlete at St. Albans, playing varsity hockey and lacrosse all four years and captaining both teams as a senior.  His friends knew him as the ultimate teammate: hard working, unselfish, and a natural leader. While he was best known for leaving it all on the field and on the ice, he also worked incredibly hard academically. Alex had a big heart, a big smile and loved scooping up ground balls or jumping on freshly Zambonied ice.

He played lacrosse at Harvard College, where he became the team’s starting face-off midfielder for four years and senior captain.  After Harvard, Alex went to medical school at Wake Forest and completed his residency at Duke University, on his way to becoming a highly trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine.

Despite all of his efforts, Alex didn't win against the cancer.  A devoted dad, he leaves behind his beloved wife Hailey Vap and two beautiful daughters Caroline and Elizabeth.

Alex’s family and friends have worked closely with St. Albans to develop an appropriate tribute for this great friend, athlete, teammate and leader.  Starting this May, the St. Albans athletic department will award the Alex Vap ’00 Best Teammate Award to the varsity athlete who best embodies Alex’s legacy as the ultimate teammate. In addition, Alex’s family and friends have established a named student scholarship fund, the Alexander Robertson Vap ’00 Endowed Scholarship, to support a student athlete at St. Albans.

Please consider contributing to this permanent endowed scholarship fund in memory of Alex, to promote the value of teamwork, future student-athletes and Alex’s legacy as the ultimate teammate.
