A Lesson in Falconry

Mr. Campbell’s Medieval Literature students welcomed master falconer Jonathan Shaw to class on May 5. Mr. Shaw brought Tundra, a peregrine falcon, whom students were able to hold, as he lectured on falconry and its significance to daily existence in the Middle Ages. Students recently read about medieval hunting and trapping with limed branches in the 12th century German text Tristan by Gottfried von Strassburg. They asked many questions about the technical aspects of hunting with birds, as well as the social status associated with different types of raptors. Mr. Shaw also related the influence of hawking terminology on the English language, from “hoodwinked” to “having a feather in one’s cap.” The visit was made possible by a grant from the Parents’ Association, and Mr. Campbell hopes it will become an annual event.
