Timely Hitting and Strong Outing From Basso Lead STA to 6-3 Win Over Landon

Staff
Junior Owen Basso took the mound for the Bulldogs in an important early season matchup with Landon Tuesday.  With Landon’s ace pitcher Robert Lee on the mound for the Bears, the Bulldogs knew they would need a great game from Basso and he delivered with a 6.2 inning gem.  The right-hander did not allow a baserunner in 4 different innings, scattered three hits, and recorded 8 strikeouts.

Clark Mocek got the Bulldogs offense started in the bottom of the second inning when he reached second base on a deep fly ball into a strong swirling wind in left field that eluded the Landon outfielder.  Mocek took third on a wild pitch and Myles Upchurch brought him home with a ground ball to the right side of the infield.  Landon responded in the top of the third with three runs off two hits, a walk, and two STA throwing errors.  That would be the only inning Landon’s offense threatened Basso.

The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the third with a 3-run offensive outburst.  Derek Desmarais ignited the Bulldogs offense with a 2-out double to the left-center gap.  Colin Rogers then hit the first of three consecutive singles to score Desmarais and then reached second on the throw to home.  Cleanup batter Nick Pittman repeated that with a single of his own scoring Rogers, and Clark Mocek knocked in Pittman with another single to give STA a 4-3 lead heading into the 4th inning.  That was all Basso needed to finish off the Bears as he put down the next 8 consecutive batters including 4 with strikeouts.  Pittman doubled home Rogers with two outs in the 5th inning and Freddy Meinhardt drove in Upchurch with a two-out single down the first base line in the 6th to finish the scoring for STA.

Basso got the first two Bears batters in the top of the 7th, then yielded a 10-pitch walk to the next batter.  Basso exited to a standing ovation from his teammates and the home fans and Jeff Davis came on to get the final out, knocking down a sharp line drive that first baseman Elliott Eaton grabbed and applied the tag to end the game.  The Bulldogs move to 3-0 in the IAC and will travel to Landon Thursday for the second game of this week’s series.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:30pm.
