Frederick & Fergus Lead Bulldogs Past Saints & Into IAC Championship

Staff
Wayne Frederick '22 was named to the High School All-American game Monday and celebrated in style Tuesday with a hat trick in St. Albans’ 6-1 IAC tournament semi-final win over St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes.  The senior Duke commit struck twice in the first ten minutes with a header at 6:46 and a finish at the crease from a James Boyle '22 feed three minutes later. The Bulldogs dominated possession and field position throughout most of the first half.  Niall Fergus '23 beat a defender at the top of the penalty area to free himself up for left-foot shot that found the back of the net at 36:40, then Frederick completed his hat trick in the final minute to give STA a 4-0 halftime lead.

The lead proved too much to overcome for St. Stephen’s, who played into overtime just 24 hours earlier in their first-round tournament win over Bullis. Fergus buried his second goal at the 56:00 mark on a rebound from a James Boyle shot, then Thomas Schehl '24 converted a penalty kick at 60:00 to finish out the scoring for STA. The Saints added a late goal to make the final score 6-1.

St. Albans will host Landon in the IAC championship game Thursday at 3:30 pm on Steuart Field. The Bears beat Georgetown Prep 2-1 in the other semi-final Tuesday. This will be the third match of the season between STA and Landon. The teams tied 1-1 on October 12, and St. Albans won 2-1 in overtime last Thursday in a late comeback that gave the Bulldogs the first seed in the tournament and home field advantage for the championship game. Three of the five goals in the teams’ first two games have been scored on penalty kicks.
