Tyler Casertano Named Head of Haverford School

Dear St. Albans Family:

I write today to share the news that our good friend and colleague, Tyler Casertano, who serves as Assistant Head of School for Advancement and Strategy, will be departing St. Albans this summer to become the next Headmaster of Haverford School, a PreK-12th grade boys school outside Philadelphia. Haverford announced Tyler’s appointment in a statement to their community at noon today:

St. Albans has a long tradition of cultivating school leaders, and we take special pride in knowing that Tyler, who began his career at St. Albans, will now go on to lead one of the nation’s finest boys schools.

As much as we will miss Tyler and the many ways he has contributed to St. Albans, we know he will enrich the Haverford community with the same wonderful qualities he has brought to our school during the years we have been blessed to work with him. We congratulate Tyler on this well-deserved achievement and wish him; his wife, Annie; his son, Mac; and his daughter, Bailey, the very best as they embark on this journey.

Tyler attended Yale University, where he majored in history and played lacrosse. The team’s leading scorer for three years, Tyler was named Academic All American, Academic All Ivy League, and All Ivy League. Before joining us at St. Albans, he spent a year working for Credit Suisse, playing Major League Lacrosse, and working with young people as a coach and tutor.

In 2009, Tyler began teaching history at St. Albans and has since taught our United States History and Cities and Civilizations courses. He also advises Form V and VI boys. A recipient of the school’s Hall-Hoffman Teacher-Coach Award, he has coached soccer, hockey, and lacrosse.

After spending a year obtaining his M.A. from the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University’s Teachers College, Tyler was named the assistant director of admissions for the Upper School and then director of admissions.

In 2019, I asked Tyler if he would serve as assistant head of school for advancement and strategy. In this role, Tyler has strengthened the school’s external relations; provided leadership in development, alumni and parent relations, and communications; and helped us craft our next strategic plan by identifying new initiatives that will expand our reach and let us live more fully into the promise and possibilities of our mission.

During his years at St. Albans, Tyler has developed strong relationships with his students, who see him as a true and trusted mentor. As a coach and teacher, he is known for taking time to get to know each student. He figures out the best way to bring out the best in every boy. Tyler believes strongly in the power of community and has an awareness of how to build a school culture — by being together at chapel and lunch, being present, listening, honoring people, and saying thank you. The son of two educators, he has spent most of his life within communities of teaching and learning; and he possesses a deep awareness of school mission and operations, from admitting students to fundraising. But he understands that the most important work, whether in the classroom or at an alumni event, is building relationships.

Very soon, I will be sharing more information about the school’s plans for a new Interim Upper School Head for the 2021-22 school year (a position Tyler had planned to assume temporarily), as well as a plan for leadership succession in Tyler’s role as Assistant Head of School for Advancement and Strategy.

For now, please join me in congratulating Tyler, thanking him for all of his contributions to our school, and wishing him the best as he begins this exciting chapter in his professional career. He will leave St. Albans with lifelong friendships and our enduring gratitude for the many ways he has made us a better community.

Sincerely,

Jason Robinson
Headmaster
