Alumni Meeting 2021

By Lanier Frank ’79, Director of Alumni Relations

The annual St. Albans Alumni Association Meeting was held via Zoom video conference on the evening of March 3. After the invocation by The Rev. Brooks Hundley, Board President Carter Mitchell ’93 called the meeting to order and offered remarks. He then introduced our new Annual Giving Chair Al-Hassan Koroma ’09, who thanked his fellow alumni for helping to set another record-breaking year of support. Richard Ruge ’59 presented the Ruge Travel Fellowship to Director of the Skip Grant Program OJ Johnson ’97 (also Assistant Director of Admissions for the Lower School and Head Varsity Basketball Coach); Board member Ed Crocker ’09 welcomed 30-year Lower School science teacher Charlie Hatch P’08 as this year’s Honorary Alumnus; and Upper School Science Teacher and Aquatics Coach Mary Van Metre was awarded The Hall-Hoffman Teacher-Coach Award. Headmaster Jason Robinson offered a special COVID-19 edition of his State of the School address and set up Board member Lars Petersen ’64 with an introduction of his classmate, keynote speaker Frank M. Snowden ’64. Board Vice-President Jason Cross ’95—who is also a tri-chair of the school’s Black Alumni Association—presented Frank M. Snowden ’64 with the Gilchrist-Holleman Alumni Service Award. Professor Snowden used his keynote to address his expertise in the study of societal reactions to epidemics, to include our current pandemic, and his Gilchrist-Holleman acceptance remarks to address his experience as the first Black student at St. Albans, paving the way for gentlemen such as Mr. Cross and hundreds of others. Rev. Hundley’s benediction closed the book on the 96th meeting of the Alumni Association in the 112th year of the school.
