Harnessing the Power of the Sun

Harnessing the Power of the Sun
What can you create when you combine foil, water, and the sun? This was the question Upper School teacher Doug Errett asked his AP Environmental Science class for the Solar Cookers Challenge, in which students designed and built an apparatus that could heat water to pasteurization temperature by harnessing the sun’s energy. The list of materials was short: cardboard, aluminum foil, plastic food wrap, glue and tape, an empty aluminum can (to hold the water), and a thermometer. Students could also use any recycled, reused, or re-purposed items brought from home. The results? A solar cooker array on the Little Field and fun in the sun.
