Lacrosse Starts Spring Break Trip With 12-8 Win Over STAB

Staff
St. Albans Lacrosse started their Spring Break trip in style with a gritty 12-8 win over St. Anne's Belfield in Charlottesville, VA.  Neither team could build more than a one-goal lead throughout the first half and the Bulldogs faced a man-down situation with less than a minute on the clock in the second quarter and the score tied at 4.  The Bulldogs did not yield a shot for 40 seconds, forcing the Saints to take a timeout with 15 seconds left to try to set up a play to get the go-ahead goal.  The STA defense, led by Pasha Hakimi, Steele Bohigian and Luke Harmon, forced a turnover to close out the half and send the Bulldogs to intermission with momentum.

Luke Harmon and Alex Pedraza scored go-ahead goals in the third quarter and STAB responded each time with equalizers.  Chris Berry broke through with a nifty move from behind the goal to put STA up 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Bulldogs spent the 3rd quarter break resolving to finish the fourth quarter strong and came out firing.  Harmon struck first for the first 2-goal lead of the game for either team, then James DiOrio picked up a loose ball in front of the STAB goal and deposited it for a 9-6 lead with 10 minutes left.  Hakimi scored in transition less than a minute later to put the Dogs up 10-6.  After a STAB timeout, the STA defense and goalie Liam McCarthy came up with two more penalty kills and some big stops.  Will Roberts won several key faceoffs and Ike Lohnes, Corbet Darden, Miles Harmon, and Matt Moore all made big defensive plays and won loose balls in transition.  Berry scored off a dodge with just under 8 minutes left, STAB responded with a man up goal, and then Moore was doubled in the X and found Berry on the left wing, who slashed into the middle of the field and buried his shot to put the Dogs up 12-7 with 3:35 left.  The Saints added a late man up goal to make the final score 12-8.

The win improves STA's record to 5-2.  Tuesday was the first stop on STA's 8-day, 5-game spring training trip.  The team will head to Charlotte, NC Wednesday for practice, then has games lined up with Charlotte Country Day (Thursday), Providence Day School (Saturday), William Amos Hough High School (Monday), and The Cannon School (Tuesday).
