Honoring Those Who Serve

The Lower School in chapel honored military veterans in advance of Veterans Day. Current parents Mike Molino, a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the U.S. Airborne Corps in Fort Bragg and deployed to Korea, Haiti, and Kosovo; Michael Leiter, a U.S. Navy pilot from 1991 to 1997, who faced combat in Iraq and Bosnia; and Sloane Menkes, first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, joined the Lower School for the service in the amphitheater. The guest chapel speaker, Menkes, spoke of commitment and sacrifice and asked those in attendance to commemorate, honor, and remember those sacrifices. “If you have a veteran, someone who served our country honorably through military service, please for a moment think of them and place them in your hearts and minds,” said Menkes. 

Form B teacher, archivist, and former Sergeant Mark Wilkerson (USMC) gave a solo performance of the Navy Hymn “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.” Toward the end of the service, Wilkerson rang eight bells, a Navy tradition at funerals, which indicates the watch is over and all is well. A special thanks to Sergeant Major Gil Hoffer (U.S. Army Band, ret.), who played trumpet throughout the service, opening with “America the Beautiful.”
