Soccer Finishes Non-League Play in Style

The Bulldogs soccer team has been working toward next Tuesday’s IAC league opener at Bullis since training camp started on August 20th.  Along the way they have battled adverse weather and a spate of injuries that impacted all areas of the lineup.  The Dogs went into their final non-league game at Georgetown Day School Thursday with the roster at its healthiest to date, resulting in an offensive outburst with 5 goals and the team’s third shutout of the season.  Niall Fergus and Russ Khosravi led the way for STA with Niall scoring twice and Russ once in the opening 40 minutes to stake the team to a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.  Spencer Hall and Scott Speaker split goalkeeping duties and posted their second consecutive combined shutout.

The Dogs kept up the offensive pressure in the second half with several beautiful crosses and well executed corner kicks.  After a St. Albans goal was called off for a foul, Khosravi buried his second goal of the game out of a scrum in front of the GDS goal.  The senior co-captain completed his hat trick five minutes later, converting a perfectly placed corner kick from Chris Bates to put the game out of reach with just under 20 minutes to play.  Speaker dove to his left to stop a penalty kick at the 25:00 mark, keeping his and Hall’s perfect record on penalties this season intact at three for three.  St. Albans finished its challenging non-league schedule at 4-2-1 and has outscored its last two opponents 8-0.  IAC League play commences with the Dogs’ 4:30pm game at Bullis next Tuesday, September 28th
