Alex Misiaszek ’21 Published in “Young Scientists Journal”
Congratulations to Alex Misiaszek ’21, whose paper on “Transforming E. Coli with Custom Gene Fragment to Produce MP1 Cancer Fighting Peptide” has been published in the Young Scientists Journal. Alex writes: “Recently, naturally occurring peptides found in the venom of various animals have been observed to have selective cancer fighting properties, targeting only malignant cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed.” One such peptide, according to Alex, who is interested in finding alternatives to chemotherapy in treating cancer, comes from the venom of the Brazilian wasp, Polybia paulistsa. Alex and a team of researchers at the public lab Baltimore Underground Science Space created genetically modified E. coli cells to produce that cancer-fighting toxin, known as MP1.
