Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.
Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

–Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963

St. Albans and NCS joined together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the interconnectedness of humanity. Students from both schools gathered in the Cathedral for a special joint chapel service with Canon Leonard Hamlin, the Canon Missioner of Washington National Cathedral, who reminded us of Dr. King’s life of service to others.

Canon Hamlin reminded us of one of Dr. King’s quotes: “Everyone can be great, because anyone can serve.” And serve they did. Following the Cathedral service, Lower School students ventured off campus to serve others organizations around the city, including Capital Area Food Bank, A Wider Circle, Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home, and the Spanish English Development Center. Form B students walked the Battery Kemble Park trail to pick up litter, and Form C students worked with Tracy’s Kids on campus to prepare gift boxes and cards for hospitalized children.

Upper School students from both schools participated in a series of coordinate teach-in workshops focused on social justice, covering topics that included the criminalization of race, the juvenile justice system in D.C., equity in the healthcare system, and the refugee experience, to name a few.

Enjoy Canon Hamlin’s homily, as well as photos of the various activities on and off campus.
