Pieces of a Portrait

In February Upper School Studio Art Teacher and School Curator David Sturtevant ’92 welcomed Washington, D.C.-based artist Imar Hutchins to St. Albans. A self-taught artist, Hutchins works primarily in collage, mixed media, and printmaking, using vintage black magazines, hate mail his family received during the Civil Rights Movement, and other historical documents, alongside traditional art materials for his pieces. A master of portraiture, Hutchins often “remixes” his subjects in new, Afro-futuristic ways while still drawing from a historical notion. Hutchins’ art will be displayed in the Faculty Convocation Room through the month of February.

Located in Washington D.C.,  St. Albans School is a private, all boys day and boarding school. For more than a century, St. Albans has offered a distinctive educational experience for young men in grades 4 through 12. While our students reach exceptional academic goals and exhibit first-rate athletic and artistic achievements, as an Episcopal school we place equal emphasis upon moral and spiritual education.
