The Rev. Dan Heischman on the Courage of Our Mistakes

As part of the Headmaster’s Lecture Series on Empathy and Ethical Decision-Making, the Rev. Dan Heischman, head of our Upper School and assistant headmaster of St. Albans School from 1994 through 2003, spoke to Upper School students, and later that same day to parents, about failure and mistakes. Heischman suggested that rather than trying to forget about our mistakes, we should have the courage to learn from them. “Our mistakes provide us with a precious learning opportunity that we can make use of over and over again,” said Heischman. “We can actually make them work for us.”

Located in Washington D.C.,  St. Albans School is a private, all boys day and boarding school. For more than a century, St. Albans has offered a distinctive educational experience for young men in grades 4 through 12. While our students reach exceptional academic goals and exhibit first-rate athletic and artistic achievements, as an Episcopal school we place equal emphasis upon moral and spiritual education.
