Dr. Wilhelm Verwoerd Speaks on Apartheid and Conflict Resolution

Dr. Wilhelm Verwoerd joined STA and NCS students for a special assembly on Wednesday, September 16, in the National Cathedral. Born in South Africa in 1964, Dr. Verwoerd grew up during the height of Apartheid, within a white, Afrikaner family and with former Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd as his grandfather. It took him more than 20 years to truly face up to the systematic dehumanization of Apartheid, leading him to join the African National Congress in the early 1990s and to work as a researcher within the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The pursuit of reconciliation, to break the cycle of suffering and violence by reaching out to those on the other side of the conflict, became his life’s work. We hope you enjoy this moving talk.
