Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race

Our Choristers went toe-to-toe, actually pancake-to-pancake, against the Bishop of Washington, Mariann Budde, other Cathedral clergy and staff, and surprise guest Darth Vader, during the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Races at the National Cathedral. The competition was fierce as participants raced the entire length of the Nave while flipping pancakes – not as easy as it looks.

After the final pancake had been flipped, one of our own Form B Choristers won the top prize – the Golden Skillet! This annual event is based on a tradition dating back to fifteenth-century England as a way for Christians to consume eggs and fat before the beginning of Lent on the following day, Ash Wednesday.
